What Does Casa de Amparo Do?
Did you know that there is a report of child abuse made every ten seconds? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, four to five children die every day in the United States from abuse or neglect. Child abuse can affect children of all socioeconomic levels, and San Diego is certainly not immune to these problems.
In San Diego County, there are about 75,000 calls placed every year to the San Diego Child Abuse Hotline. In addition to that, there are over 10,000 substantiated cases of child abuse reported. About 3,500 children in San Diego County live in foster care each year because of abuse or neglect.
Also, please keep in mind that child abuse isn’t just a youth problem. Studies have shown that 40% of the children who are in the foster care system will go on to have issues in adulthood, including but not limited to substance abuse, homelessness, incarceration, or reliance on public assistance.
Casa de Amparo was established in 1978 to combat these problems and help children, teens, and their families in San Diego find safe shelter and treatment. Casa de Amparo offers protection to those affected by child abuse and abandonment and offers a continuum of prevention and treatment services to over 1,000 children and 950 families in San Diego County annually.
Casa de Amparo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is always in need of financial assistance and volunteer support. FTP Vacations reviews and supports charities that are making a difference, and Casa de Amparo is one that it is proud to support.
